Road Trip to Winthrop
On the Road With the Byskovs to Winthrop, Washington State
Mette and Søren, who were visiting from Denmark asked us; When in British Columbia, how difficult would it be to make a short visit across the border into Washington State in the USA?
It is indeed easy as long as you have your visas ready. The decision was made. We were going to the US. On our way back from the Okanagan Valley we crossed the border in Osoyoos and decided on a route along Highway 20 which would take us through Winthrop and later on the Washington Pass.
Lunch in Twisp
We had booked one night at the Winthrop Inn but were starving before we hit Winthrop and Di found us a nice lunch spot in Twisp, only 9 miles from Winthrop. The Cinnamon Twisp Bakery was a hit with sandwiches and, yes delicious cinnamon buns.
We even had a little rest in Twisp Park before heading for the Winthrop Inn. Twisp feels quaint and authentic in comparison to Winthrop and is certainly worth a stop if you are on this route.
The Western-Themed Town of Winthrop
If you fancy Western-Themed towns you have come to the right place in Winthrop. The main drag has countless, souvenir shops, restaurants, a brewery, a saloon, and a hat store where you can buy yourself a perfectly fitting Stetson and wear it walking up and down Riverside Drive.
The wood facades and fonts used on shops, hotels, and many other buildings make you feel as if you have time traveled to a western town in the late 1800s. It is certainly touristy but not over the top. I would say it is tastefully done and the town has a lovely vibe.
After checking in at the Winthrop Inn we headed to town just in the knick of time to browse the shops and found some good souvenirs as well. It had been a long day and warm day and the Old School House Brewery lured us in for a cold beer.
We liked the place so much that we stayed for dinner which we enjoyed on the outside patio by the river. The Old School Brewery has an amazing atmosphere and good service and was a hit with everyone in our group.
Evening Walk
After dinner, we went for an exploratory walk in the area near the Winthrop Inn. It was a gorgeous summer evening and we found a nice hiking trail across the Chevron Station on Riverside Drive.
East 20 Pizza was a beehive of activity and a young man was making changes to the showtimes of movies playing at the Barnyard Cinema.
The Methow Valley Thriftway and Pony drive-through Espresso place were closed for the evening and a big rig transporting hay was parked outside one of the hotels along the highway. RVs and motorcycles were headed in and out of town. I am always surprised by how much you see when you take a stroll with the camera.
