Remote Work Week in Vernon
Working Remotely, Pre-Wedding, and a Baby Shower
It was Di’s first and my second trip to Vernon BC this year. Our friends, Dagny and Phiippe’s daughter Myanna’s baby shower turned into a week-long stay with a pleasant mix of work and play.
Our big family event this year will be our daughter Emma’s and Simon’s wedding which will take place in Denmark in June. Dagny and Phillippe arranged a wonderful pre-wedding dinner for Emma and Simon as they won’t be able to join us in Denmark.
Work and Play
Di worked remotely during our stay and I had a corporate portrait shoot which triggered a rental of the Fujifilm GF 110mm f/2 R LM WR that I planned to try out for more street and landscape photography.
The weather was stunningly beautiful and warm when we arrived and on the first morning, I jumped in the car and drove around Vernon and the vicinity. It was nice to see the town wake up and great to explore the streets of a place where I used to live for more than twenty years.
Street Photography
The Fujifilm GF 110mm f/2 R LM WR with a full-frame equivalent field of view of 85mm is a bit longer than what I would normally use for this application but it was refreshing to try it out again.
I must, however, stress that the weight of 2.22 lb, 1010 g, is heavier than what I feel comfortable lugging around for street photography. The GF 100mm performed amazingly well for my portrait session and I have now rented it several times for this application. Unfortunately, I am not able to share the client's portrait photos.
BX Falls
A trip to Vernon does not feel right without a visit to Silver Star Mountain. I dropped in for coffee at Ross and Amanda’s and on my way to Silver Star, I was met by sleet and the thermometer in my car read 7 degrees Celcius. Just the day before it read 35.5 degrees Celcius in Vernon. The joys and traveling in the mountains in spring.
On my way back from Silver Star I pulled over to take a look at the spring run-off/melt at BX Falls close to our old neighborhood. In springtime, this is a must-see and hear. The roar from the melted snow gushing into the ravine is almost deafening.
Hanging Out With Friends
The best part, by far, with a remote work trip such as this is the time it gives you to catch up with friends. We had a coffee and dinner on the deck when the weather allowed, had a wonderful dinner at Intermezzo, and hiked a new trail from Turtle Mountain into the Bellavista area.
Philippe and I did an e-bike test ride and agreed that is something we need to take a closer look at in the near future.
Kamloops
On our drive back to Vancouver Di supported a new employee in Kamloops which gave me a few hours to explore. Nearby was Mt. Dufferin which was an excellent morning hike. Not too long, and not too short. It gave me some much-needed exercise and great views of the Thompson River and the Kamloops area.
And that wraps up our remote work week in Vernon and Kamloops. It is hard to believe but two weeks from today, we leave on our first international flight since our 5050 travel project that ended in February 2020.
We are bound for Denmark where we will stay for six weeks. Stay tuned for updates from Copenhagen, Samsø, Aarhus, Assentoft, and the Western part of Denmark near my hometown of Lemvig.
