Sony E Lenses on Nikon Z Cameras With the Megadap ETZ21 Pro Sony E-Mount to Nikon Z-Mount Autofocus Adapter
The sun came out to play on a late afternoon, the first week of February and I was headed out for a photo walk with my buddy Kyle. A few weeks earlier he mentioned to me that he was using a Sony FE 35mm f/1.4 GM lens with his Nikon Z9 and I was very curious about this.
I tested the Sony FE 35mm f/1.4 GM with a Sony A7R IV and later on with a Sony A7 IV. I was quite impressed with this lens but it never dawned on me that I could use it with Nikon Z-Mount camera.
I am currently using a Nikon Z6 III and up until recently it was blue sky thinking that you would be able to use Sony E lenses with a Nikon camera.
Introduction
Sony is arguably the most versatile full-frame option if you are looking for a variety of lens options. Sony’s own library is extensive but it doesn’t stop here. Sigma, Tamron, Voigtländer, and a plethora of other third-party manufacturers supply lenses for Sony E-Mount and Sony is often the first to be covered when new lenses hit the market.
However, with the introduction of the Megadap ETZ21 Pro Sony E-Mount Lens to Nikon Z-Mount Autofocus Adapter, you can now argue that the best mount for variety is the Nikon Z-Mount. This will, of course, only hold true if the adapter works properly and if you are willing to buy the adapter at the current cost of $249.00.
There is a buzz on photo forums about this Megadap adapter, and from my first test, I can see why.

It’s Tiny
The Megadap ETZ21 Pro Sony E-Mount Lens to Nikon Z-Mount Autofocus Adapter one of the thinest and most unobtrusive adapters I have used, and I have tried a few.
Going from one mirrorless camera to another is easier when it comes to the size of the adapter as the distance from the lens to the sensor is shorter than with a adapter going from a DSLR to a mirrorless camera.
The adapter is so insignificant that you do not feel that it is there. It has contacts going the the camera ensuring that you can use autofocus, image statbilization, and EXIF info will also be transferred.

Image Quality
As mentioned above, I reviewed the Sony FE 35mm f/1.4 GM and found it a solid performer. I did not see any degradation in image quality when using the adapter. The colors are punchy, and the images are very sharp, even at f/1.4.

Conclusion
At first sight, the Megadap ETZ21 Pro Sony E to Nikon Z-Mount adapter appears to be a legitimate option that should not be disregarded as hype.
Autofocus felt snappy, and only once did a loose focus, and the lens would go through the range from close-up to infinity before it locked in again. I would have expected this to happen more often.
Although it may not fully match the speed of native lenses, it feels very close on this first attempt.

Your choices of lenses go up dramatically with the option of this adapter enabling you to use Sony E-Mount lenses on your Nikon Z camera. This is a big help if you plan to move from Sony to Nikon and already have a few Sony lenses.
There may also be a lens or two in Sony E-Mount that has your attention, lenses that are not available in Z-Mount.
I do not have Sony lenses or cameras, but I find some of their lenses appealing, especially the range of f/1.4 lenses. Nikon is now adding a few f/1.4 lenses but mainly offers f/1.8 or f/1.2 lenses, and I often find the f/1.2 lenses too large.
Is this enough reason to start building a library of Sony lenses for your Nikon Z camera? I am not so sure on this point, especially considering you have to add the cost of the adapter to the equation.
Thanks again to my buddy Kyle for providing the lens and adapter for this review.
