Fuji XF 33mm f/1.4 R LM WR - First Look

It has been a long wait but the XF 33mm f/1.4 R LM WR is finally available in stores. The lens was announced at the Fujifilm X Summit event in early September. Global supply chain issues, however, delayed the availability date to early November.

I picked up my XF 33mm f/1.4 R LM WR this week and took a quick glance at the weather report which indicated seven days of rain!

Perhaps needless to say, this was not what I hoping for but much to my surprise I woke up to the skies clearing on day one with this new lens and jumped out with the goal of capturing the first round of sample images.

I already own the Fujifilm XF 35mm f/1.4 R and adding the XF 33mm f/1.4 R is a bit of a gamble as the XF 35mm f/1.4 R is an excellent lens in its own right.

Will the XF 33mm f/1.4 R LM WR add anything significant to the image quality or is this lens mostly about improved handling and build quality characteristics?

First Impressions

Out of the box, it feels very much like the new XF 18mm f/1.4 R LM WR and Fujifilm has continued this new design with the XF 33mm f/1.4 R LM WR and XF 23mm f/1.4 R LM WR.

If anything, the XF 33mm f/1.4 R LM WR feels denser, weighing 12.7 oz, 360 g, which is almost the same as the XF 18mm f/1.4 but with a smaller filter diameter of 58mm. The XF 33mm f/1.4 feels excellent in the hand but is a much larger lens compared to the XF 35mm f/1.4 R, especially factoring in the larger lens hood.

This is a “first look” only as I wanted to share a few sample images as soon as possible. Stay tuned for a full review coming up in the near future as I take the XF 33mm f/1.4 R LM WR through its paces.

From this initial batch of sample images and the first outing with the lens, I will not spoil anything by mentioning that the keywords of my review will be sharpness, quality of bokeh, autofocus performance, and user experience. So far, so good on all fronts. Much more to come.
