Phare de la Pointe d'Agon - A Walk at Low Tide
Phare de la Pointe d’Agon near Agon-Coutainville, Normandy
Snippets From Our France and Italy Trip
A couple of weeks ago we had a post from our stay in Agon-Countainville with friends, Dagny and Philippe. In this post, I promised to share more about a wonderful afternoon walk we did at low tide south of Agon-Coutainville at Phare de la Pointe d’Agon.
The lighthouse at Phare de la Pointe d’Agon is a short ten-minute drive from Agon Countainville and there is parking right at the lighthouse making for a good starting point.
From Wikipedia, we learned that the lighthouse at Pointe d’Agon was built in 1856 on the site of an old fort which was destroyed in 1776 by a strong tide. The fort defended the entrance to the harbor of Regnéville-sur-Mer.
We stayed in Regnéville-sur-Mer during our first visit to this region back in 2016 and it was easy to see why the location of the lighthouse would make sense at the entrance to the bay.
Low Tide
After crossing the first stretch over the dunes you reach the coast and at low tide, it feels as if you can walk a mile before you meet the water’s edge.
We did the walk on a gorgeous day in early to mid-June with blue skies and white puffy clouds on the horizon. Bring a jacket or windbreaker as temperatures can be slightly cooler on the coast.
We can warmly recommend this walk as the scenery was otherworldly beautiful. The fresh sea breeze and the sun were invigorating and we all came back with smiles ear to ear.
How To Get There
Agon-Coutainville is located in Normandy, France. We took the train from Gare Saint Lazare in Paris to Coutances. From Countances a rental car will allow you to explore the entire region and coastline.
